Madrid Airport Barajas
The Madrid-Barajas Airport enjoys the status as the major international airport in Madrid as well as being known in the world to be the gateway to the Iberian Peninsula that has drawn millions of passengers all over the world. The Madrid-Barajas Airport was constructed in the late 1920’s (see below) and until now it is considered to be one of the most essential airports in Europe. It also serves as the most important link between Europe and Latin America (it is the European Airport with the largest number of flights to and from L.A.), and with the construction of Terminal 4, the airport can now accommodate more than 70 million passengers every year.
The Madrid-Barajas Airport got its name from the nearby Barajas whose railway station is also connected to the railway station going to the airport. The airport started with three terminals that are interconnected, so passengers can change planes from domestic to international flights. Though Terminal 1 is spacious, most passengers get confused. Terminals 2 and 3 are a bit small, and the facilities are placed unevenly. Terminal 4, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the largest terminals in Europe. Despite the enormity of the airport, considerable effort is made to ensure that picking up hired cars is quick and easy. If you know your flight number at the time you book your rental car in Barajas, it is even better. The Barajas Airport has parking spaces that are properly placed to give convenience to the passengers as well as bus stations that connect the airport to Madrid.
The construction of this airport began in 1927 and flights started in 1931. The first regular flights came shortly after that, and they were the Air Mail flights to and from Barcelona. Commercial flights started later in the 30’s.
